Why we do it

A passion for education...

Education is life transforming; it is a hugely rewarding sector to work in and any involvement is a privilege. But not one without challenges.

Marketing education is challenging; it  is not a defined product with guaranteed results. The success of the student is as much dependent on their own performance as it is the quality of facilities and lectures. There are many within the sector that feel marketing education is an inherently unedifying activity.

The market is fragmented and multi-channel audiences make reaching the right person more complicated.  But at Spark and Bangle we love a challenge and what's more, we're sympathetic both to the needs of the student and the recruiter.

...And youth marketing

Young people today eh, I don’t know. Making scientific breakthroughs in their bedroom, engineering cheap and simple solutions to global problems and moving onto their next start-up company. The democratisation of new technology has allowed young creative minds to use and explore kit once only reserved to those in big business or expensive research facilities.

Furthermore, we are at point of generational change where the first wave of the Gen Z 'screenager' generation will be coming through the Higher Education system replacing the much talked about Gen Y 'millennials'.

There is a lot to be excited and optimistic about. At Spark and Bangle we celebrate youth thinking; being open, curious, idealistic and enthusiastic.

Uncovering Truths

Marketing can be a lot like dieting, everyone knows what they should be doing but it is often difficult to stick to a plan. Think of Spark and Bangle as a ‘my fitness pal’, providing ongoing support from an external and evidence-based perspective.

Here are some challenges to applying a marketing led approach:

Customer Focus

The dream...
A marketing-led business where every member of staff is customer focused and a passionate brand ambassador.

The reality...
Some staff believe the customer should be grateful they get a service. Often the staff  that are not your direct line reports.

Marketing investment

The dream...
High quality marketing outputs based on extensive market research that are appropriately tailored by audience. Staff have the time and head space to be pro-active and not reactive to the market.

The reality...
Marketing is often the first department to feel cutbacks when there is a need to stream-line. Particularly in a sector where marketing can be perceived as a necessary evil rather than central to customer experience.

Communication

The dream...
A marketing-led business has clear and open communication channels between all colleagues and departments.

The reality...
There are gatekeepers of critical information.

Social Plan

The dream...
Strong social media platforms with high engagement through regular updates tailored to audience interest.

The reality...
For a 'free' media, social media is awfully expensive to do. The cost is largely time which can equate to needing more staff and therefore adding expensive. Fear of not being able to manage and respond can lead to no activity at all.
